Jennifer Tan Uy makes history as first Filipina to finish Ultraman World Championships

Jennifer Tan Uy has etched her name in Philippine sports history by becoming the first Filipina to complete the grueling Ultraman World Championships in Hawaii, a three-day, 515-kilometer multisport race known for testing even the toughest athletes from across the globe.

No participant from the Philippines had ever finished the competition before Uy, who proudly carried the Philippine flag across the finish line.

“When I crossed the finish line, I wanted the world to see that Filipinos can do it. The milestone is for the Philippines. It is a symbol of what Filipinos can do,” Uy told the media after the race.

Only 20 athletes were invited to participate in the Ultraman World Championships, and while several dropped out along the way, Uy displayed unwavering determination and a never-say-die attitude.

She completed Day 1 with a 10 km swim in four hours and 39 minutes, followed by a 144 km bike leg in 7:17:57. Day 2 consisted of another 275.84 km of cycling, finished in 11:28:16, before culminating in the 84.3 km double marathon on Day 3. Uy’s overall time was 34:00:05, placing her 13th overall and third among women.

Uy revealed that missing the cutoff by just two minutes at Ultraman Florida earlier this year fueled her determination to succeed in Hawaii.

“Knowing my struggle in Florida stemmed from poor fueling, I enforced a strict, pre-planned nutrition schedule. Every 15 minutes, calories and electrolytes. The mindset that fueled my final push was mission-driven motivation. I shifted my focus from personal discomfort to the responsibility of being the first Filipino to complete the Ultraman World Championship. That sense of accountability to a goal bigger than myself gave me the emotional fuel to override the urge to quit.

“The most crucial preparation was my meticulous nutrition and recovery strategy. It wasn’t just about fueling. It was a disciplined process designed to manage risk and maintain physical sustainability over a prolonged, stressful period. That meant prioritizing sleep, refueling, and systems that would keep my body from shutting down. I committed to maintaining a positive mindset and demeanor throughout the race — not just for myself, but to prevent my attitude from adding stress to my team,” she added.

Uy’s historic feat highlighted not only her extraordinary physical endurance but also her mental toughness and determination, ensuring the Philippine flag flew high at one of the world’s toughest endurance events.
