Carlos Yulo expects brother to join him in events next year

Fresh off another year of elite-level success, Carlos is shifting part of his focus toward the rapid rise of his younger brother, who recently announced that he will make the leap to senior competition in 2026

For the two-time world champion, the move marks the start of what could be a formidable family partnership for the national team.

“For the team, malaking tulong talaga si Eldrew,” the elder Yulo said.. “Alam kong paghahandaan niya ’yun, kahit di magiging madali.”

Eldrew has quickly emerged as one of the most promising Filipino gymnasts of his generation after a double-bronze campaign at the last Junior World Championships turned heads internationally and further validated years of steady progress under the same training system that helped shape Carlos into a global star. 

With his transition to seniors now confirmed, the younger Yulo has set his sights on joining the Philippine team in its major assignments beginning next year.

Carlos has witnessed that growth firsthand, but what impresses him most, he said, is not the similarities in their training but the differences in their expression.

“Totally different movement and different style talaga,” he said. “That’s what makes him special. Iba ’yung approach niya sa routines, mas explosive in some parts. He’s really the next generation.”

The brothers have not yet formally competed together at a major senior international meet, but Carlos believes that moment is finally within reach. With Olympic qualifiers, continental championships, and World Cup circuits lined up next season, he expects Eldrew to appear alongside him in at least several major events.

Beyond the technical and competitive advantages, Carlos admits there is an emotional layer to the possibility of performing side by side with his sibling on a world stage, saying that the shared experience of high-pressure competitions, training abroad, and representing the country will mean even more when done together.

“Siyempre mas masarap sa pakiramdam kung magkasama kami,” he added. “Mas motivating, mas inspiring.”

For now, Carlos continues his own preparations while serving as a mentor figure to Eldrew, offering guidance in areas ranging from routine composition to training discipline. 

However, he stressed that the younger Yulo’s rise is entirely his own doing,  built on years of quiet work, growing maturity, and an eagerness to prove himself at the senior level.
