LeBron James confident Lakers will overcome three-point shooting woes

The Los Angeles Lakers have made a strong start to the 2025-26 NBA season, sitting second in the Western Conference with a 12-4 record.

Their momentum continued in their latest outing, a 108-106 road win over the Utah Jazz at the Delta Center on Monday, November 24 (Philippine Standard Time). Luka Doncic led the charge with 33 points, 11 rebounds, and eight assists, while Austin Reaves contributed 22 points, 10 rebounds, and four assists. Lakers icon LeBron James, returning from injury, added 17 points, six rebounds, and eight assists in roughly 34 minutes on the floor.

Despite the team’s strong start, one area of concern has been their three-point shooting. The Lakers currently rank 26th in the NBA in three-point percentage and last in three-pointers made. Even in the win over Utah, they shot just 26 percent from beyond the arc, a statistic that has raised eyebrows among fans and analysts alike.

LeBron addressed these struggles in a media interaction, expressing confidence that the team’s shooting woes are temporary.

“It won’t last. I’m not worried about it. We got too many good shooters, it won’t last. We are getting great looks. I mean, if we were shooting bad shots and missing then we could be worrying about how can we create better looks. We are getting great looks. All of us. So I’m not worried about that, the numbers will average out,” LeBron said.

Currently, Rui Hachimura is the only Lakers shooter posting above-average numbers from deep, making 48.3 percent of his three-point attempts. LeBron sees this as a testament to the team’s resilience, noting that they can still win games even when struggling from outside.

“We are not worried about that. Like I said, if we were out there not creating great looks or we were playing selfish basketball, that’s not our m.o. You look at over half of the threes we missed tonight, a lot of them were wide open, but a lot of them was just finding the right player. The ball has so much energy in it that we are not worried about that. When we are not making shots we got to defend. And this team right here is a team that can put up 140, can put up 130, can score with the best of them. You got to be able to get stops and it took us all the way to the last possession to get the stop that we needed to win the ballgame. So that’s the encouraging part, knowing that even when we are not shooting the ball well we can still win ballgames,” he added.

While the Lakers are winning games and showing strong chemistry, improving their three-point shooting will be crucial if they aim to contend seriously for the NBA title. The responsibility falls on Doncic, Reaves, Jake LaRavia, and LeBron to address this weakness in the coming weeks.

The team will look to see progress in this area when they face their hometown rivals, the Los Angeles Clippers, in the NBA Cup at home on Wednesday, November 26 (Philippine Standard Time).
