Tim Cone discusses Jamie Malonzo’s potential return to Barangay Ginebra amid PBA ban

Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) powerhouse Barangay Ginebra San Miguel suffered a major setback ahead of the ongoing Philippine Cup after star forward Jamie Malonzo left the franchise in a shock move.

Malonzo initially departed for Japan B.League club Kyoto Hannaryz, but his stint was short-lived, as he was released after appearing in just five games.

When asked about a potential return of Malonzo to the PBA, Barangay Ginebra head coach Tim Cone left the question to the league, saying:

“That, you have to ask the PBA about.”

Even if Malonzo wanted to come back, he would be unable to do so due to a recent PBA Board resolution that took effect in Season 50. The rule bars all players—including rookies—who take their talents overseas from returning to the league for three years. The Office of the Commissioner has confirmed that Malonzo is covered by this ban.

At 29, Malonzo remains determined to continue his career in Japan, seeking opportunities with other B.League clubs. Meanwhile, his immediate focus is on representing the Philippine national basketball team, as Gilas Pilipinas gears up for the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027 Asian Qualifiers.

Cone, who also serves as Gilas Pilipinas head coach, praised Malonzo’s attitude in training and emphasized that he remains a key part of the national team setup despite his acrimonious exit from Ginebra.

“I like the way he is really playing right now. He looks really motivated. He is motivated to prove himself. He is out there hitting shots, dunking in practice, and he looks really healthy. So we will see how that goes on,” Cone said.

“Whether he is playing for me, playing for Barangay Ginebra, or playing in Japan or anywhere else, that has nothing to do with being in Gilas. Absolutely nothing. We are happy to have him. He really adds depth to what we are doing,” he added.

For now, Malonzo is fully committed to the national team as he awaits his next opportunity in club basketball. Fans will be keenly watching as Gilas Pilipinas begin their FIBA World Cup 2027 Asian qualifying campaign against Guam in home-and-away fixtures on November 28 and December 1.
