Ignoring pressure, Jimuel Pacquiao wants to carve his own path in boxing

A new Pacquiao is entering the professional boxing world as Jimuel, Manny’s eldest, will make his much-awaited debut on Saturday, Nov. 29, at the Pechanga Resort Casino in California.

Pacquiao will face fellow debutant Brandon Lally in a four-round Lightweight affair.

The 24-year-old is aware of the pressure that comes from his decorated father, who captured his first of eight world titles at 19 years old.

“The pressure is definitely there. People like to compare because my dad was already a world champion by the time he was 20,” he said.

The elder Pacquiao stopped Thailand’s Chatchai Sasakulin in eight rounds to nab the World Boxing Council (WBC) Flyweight world title way back in 1998.

By the time he was his son’s age, Manny was already on his way to becoming one of the sport’s biggest stars by being a two-division king, and after finishing his legendary rival, Marco Antonio Barrera.

For Jimuel, he will start his boxing journey by walking on his own stride and having an inspiration of his own from his daughter, who was born a week ago.

Pacquiao is coached by Marvin Somodio, a longtime cornerman of his father and assistant to the legendary Freddie Roach.

Despite ignoring the pressure, the eldest Pacquiao is still influenced by his father, and has welcomed advice during his training camp.

“I learn from the best, my dad,” said Jimuel.“My father is a very big influence on my training, especially on my footwork. He is always watching. I try to take some of his moves.”

His father and mother, Jinkee Pacquiao, will reportedly be ringside for his long-awaited debut next week.

Jimuel’s debut comes after stepbrother Eman Bacosa defeated Nico Salado in the Thrilla in Manila 2 card last month.
