Bryann Calantoc confirms Titan Ultra open to trades as Joshua Munzon’s future remains uncertain

The new Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) franchise Titan Ultra Giant Risers have had a rough start to their inaugural season, struggling in the Philippine Cup with just two wins and six losses, leaving them near the bottom of the standings.

Reports recently surfaced that Titan Ultra management might explore trading star guard/wingman and reigning PBA Most Improved Player winner Joshua Munzon in a bid to strengthen the squad.

Munzon entered the Philippine Cup as one of Titan Ultra’s most important players but has struggled to replicate the form that earned him the MIP award last season, particularly in defeats to the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters and NLEX Road Warriors.

Despite the team’s struggles, Titan Ultra owner Bryann Calantoc refused to single out Munzon for criticism.

“The kid is doing his job naman. There may be errors and miscues, but it’s all part of the game. It has always been a team for us. We win as a team, we lose as a team. Walang nasisi at nasi-single out. It’s just unfair,” Calantoc said in a recent media interaction.

Calantoc confirmed that any potential trade would focus on acquiring a big man to bolster Titan Ultra’s frontline, but stressed that the team would not part with future first-round picks.

“We need a big man who can provide stability sa aming slot position. I know it’s a rare commodity in the league right now, but we will not stop until we get one or hopefully two. No. We will not trade our future picks. If we want a certain player, we will just tell the teams to pick from our present core of players.

“Well, if Josh is worth the big man we need, why not? It will be hard for us to decide on that, but we need something to balance the team. Josh is very integral to us, but sometimes we need to do some sacrifice.

“Josh is coming off an impressive season with the NorthPort Batang Pier before we acquired the franchise. So, I think he can be a good trading asset. But right now, kung ako tatanungin nyo, di pa namin inaalok si Josh. If may magandang offer, we can talk about it.”

The management has made it clear how much they value Munzon, even awarding him a bonus after his Most Improved Player triumph—an incentive granted despite him winning the award before joining Titan Ultra.

“But I would love Josh to stay with us. That’s how we value our players. Kasi sinalo na namin yung incentive nya even though he won the award at a time na hindi pa Titan ang team,” Calantoc added.

All eyes will be on Munzon’s situation as the PBA takes a short break. Titan Ultra will return to action on Saturday, December 6, facing Terrafirma Dyip at the Ynares Center in Antipolo.
