Jamie Malonzo is back in Manila and ready to rejoin Gilas Pilipinas as the national team prepares for the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027 Asian Qualifiers. The 29-year-old forward returned to the country after his unexpected release from the Kyoto Hannaryz in the Japan B.League last October.

Malonzo said he is approaching this window with renewed focus and a desire to prove himself.

“I’m excited and motivated, of course. Awesome time,” he said.

When asked what fuels that motivation, he added: “Of course, there’s a certain motivation. Just the situation. Of course, I want to always prove my worth, show what I can do.”

His sudden departure from Kyoto came just months after he opted to continue his career overseas instead of remaining with Barangay Ginebra in the PBA. Despite the surprising nature of the move, Malonzo handled the situation professionally and said the decision was not personal.

“I think it’s part of the business, it’s part of the game. Every team needs to make adjustments to be successful. I think it’s just something that the team needed. I don’t think it’s anything personal or anything skill-related,” he said. “I think it’s just that they really needed big men at the time. So it’s nothing to be frustrated about. Just focus on my next goal, next team, next situation.”

For now, Malonzo is fully committed to the national team as he waits for his next opportunity in club basketball.

“Still focused on the same goal. I think it’s important to stay positive and just keep attacking my next day, next goal. My priority is Gilas and then hopefully, something transpires,” he said.

After dealing with injuries during the latter part of his stint with Ginebra, Malonzo also shared that he is in better physical condition heading into the qualifiers.

“I feel like I’m very healthy right now. Very healthy. I just want to keep going for sure. Extra motivation always,” he said.

Gilas Pilipinas continues its preparations for the opening window of the Asian Qualifiers, where Malonzo is expected to play a key role on the wings.
