Filipina star Alex Eala trains with tennis icon Rafael Nadal after WTA 2025 season

For a young tennis star on the rise, few experiences could match practicing with one of the sport’s all-time greats. That opportunity came on Wednesday, Nov. 19, when Filipina tennis sensation Alex Eala shared the court with retired legend Rafael Nadal at the Rafa Nadal Academy in Mallorca, Spain.

The 22-time Grand Slam champion posted a video of the practice on social media, reflecting on his return to the court after nearly a year away. “One year later, it felt great to be back on a tennis court. It was great to practice with you, Alex Eala! Next time I will be stronger,” Nadal wrote.

Eala responded humbly on the post: “Thank you for today, Rafa.”

The Rafa Nadal Academy also highlighted the session, calling it “A truly unique day at the Academy: @alex.eala on court with Rafa Nadal, one year after his last match at the Davis Cup. Incredible to see him back on court, sharing his passion and knowledge.”

Nadal, who last competed in November of the previous year at the Davis Cup Finals in Malaga, Spain, lost in the quarterfinals to Botic van de Zandschulp, 6-4, 6-4.

For Eala, ranked No. 50 in the world, the session was not only a chance to train with a legend but also an invaluable learning experience as she continues preparing for upcoming tournaments.

Eala has enjoyed a breakthrough season on the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) tour. After a semifinal run at the Miami Open — defeating former Grand Slam champions Jelena Ostapenko, Madison Keys, and Iga Swiatek along the way — she earned entry into several high-ranking tournaments. Starting the season ranked No. 147, she captured her first WTA title at the Guadalajara Open in September and made her Grand Slam main draw debut at Roland Garros.

Beyond the professional circuit, Eala is also being eyed to represent the Philippines at the 33rd Southeast Asian Games in Thailand, adding national pride to her rising international profile.

This rare session with Nadal represents more than just hitting balls; it is a glimpse into the mindset, preparation, and passion that has defined one of tennis’ greatest careers. For Eala, the experience serves as both inspiration and motivation — a bridge between the legend’s legacy and her own promising journey in the sport.
