‘I will be watching it’: LeBron James to sit out 2028 LA Olympics

LeBron James has confirmed that he will not participate in the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, choosing to sit out the Games and watch from the stands instead. 

The 40-year-old Lakers star made the announcement during an appearance on the Mind the Game podcast, explaining that his Olympic journey is complete and that he is content with the medals he has already earned.

“You already know my answer,” James said on the podcast. “I will be watching it.”

With four Olympic medals to his name, bronze in 2004 and gold in 2008, 2012, and 2024, James feels his contributions to Team USA have already cemented his legacy on the international stage.

James is expected to have a front-row seat in Inglewood during the Games, potentially joining longtime rival and friend Stephen Curry.

 Like James, Curry, who will also be 40 by the 2028 Games, expressed doubts about suiting up for Team USA again. 

On the podcast, Curry admitted that while he remains in shape and hopes to continue competing at a high level, the likelihood of returning to Olympic play is “highly doubtful.”

The decision marks another turning point in LeBron’s storied career, coming after he missed several Lakers games due to sciatica but has since returned to action.

In his Olympic career, James has been an integral part of multiple Team USA squads, helping secure three gold medals and one bronze over a span of two decades.
