The San Antonio Spurs have suffered a significant setback in the 2025-26 NBA season as star center Victor Wembanyama is expected to miss a “few weeks” due to a calf injury.
The team confirmed in a statement early Tuesday, November 18 (Philippine Standard Time), that Wembanyama suffered a left calf strain during their NBA Cup game against the Golden State Warriors on Saturday, November 15.
“The San Antonio Spurs today announced that Victor Wembanyama underwent an MRI that revealed he has a left calf strain. The injury occurred in Friday’s night game against the Golden State Warriors. The team will provide updates as appropriate,” the Spurs said.

Wembanyama sat out San Antonio’s victory over the Sacramento Kings, and while no exact return date has been set, reports indicate he will be sidelined for several weeks.
Head coach Mitch Johnson emphasized that the team is taking a cautious approach with the young French star.
“Obviously, we have seen around this league recently, the calf-tightness thing is not something you want to take lightly. Don’t want to push it there,” Johnson said.
Wembanyama’s absence is a major blow for the Spurs on both ends of the floor. He currently leads the team in points (26.2), rebounds (12.9), and blocks (3.6) per game — topping the league in blocks — while also averaging 4.0 assists over 12 games this season.
It’s worth noting that Wembanyama played just 46 games last season after being diagnosed with deep vein thrombosis, which required surgery to clear a blood clot. He had returned to form early in the 2025-26 campaign, appearing healthy before the latest setback.
The Spurs are off to their best start in a decade, boasting a 9-4 record, including a franchise-record 5-0 start, and currently sit fifth in the Western Conference. How San Antonio navigates this stretch without its centerpiece will be crucial as they aim to remain in the top half of the conference standings.
