PSC explores streamlining Palarong Pambansa and Batang Pinoy after Asian Youth Games success

The Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) is exploring ways to implement changes in the current programs of the Palarong Pambansa and Batang Pinoy, aiming to create a more streamlined and efficient pathway for young Filipino athletes. This comes after the country’s historic performance at the 2025 Asian Youth Games in Bahrain.

PSC chairman Patrick Gregorio confirmed during a press conference honoring the medalists from the Asian Youth Games that the commission is in talks with the Department of Education to reorganize the current structure of the youth programs.

“Hindi po siya iu-unify, liwanagin ko lang po, hindi siya iu-unify. Isi-streamline po natin, iha-harmonize po natin para ‘yung age group malawak. Because we have to support the initiatives of the Philippine Olympic Committee, lalo na napakaimportante nitong Asian Youth Games, Youth Olympic Games. Alam po namin ni POC president Bambol Tolentino ‘yan,” Gregorio said.

The 2025 calendar saw Batang Pinoy coinciding with the closing stages of the Asian Youth Games, forcing athletes such as MMA stars Charlie and Travis Ratcliff to travel directly from Bahrain to General Santos City to compete, with little to no rest.

Gregorio emphasized that the PSC’s role is not limited to supporting senior-level athletes but also nurturing talent at various youth levels.

“I was there during the Youth Olympic Games in Argentina. Na-realize ko, pwede tayong manalo rito ah. Kaya ako, very happy ako na ang Philippine Olympic Committee at ang NSAs, tinututukan na natin ‘to.

“Because ‘yung nananalo diyan, sa AYG, ‘yung nananalo diyan sa Youth Olympic Games, ‘yan na rin ho ang nananalo sa Olympics at saka sa Asian Games. Huwag na natin bitawan ito. Kasi I’m sure, alam natin, that is the right pathway and the right runway,” he added.

The Philippine delegation capped a record-breaking performance at the Bahrain Games, securing seven golds, seven silvers, and 10 bronzes, finishing 12th overall — the country’s best placement in Asian Youth Games history.

With these reforms, the PSC hopes to further strengthen the development pipeline for Filipino athletes, ensuring that young talents have a clear and supportive path to success at the continental and global level.
