The Premier Volleyball League’s (PVL) visit to Candon City was meant to be another exciting stop in its nationwide tour — a celebration of the sport’s growing reach beyond Manila. But this time, the games carried a deeper meaning.

As the floodlights glowed inside the Candon City Arena on November 8, the cheers weren’t just for spikes and digs. They echoed a message of solidarity and compassion.

Thanks to an initiative led by Candon City Mayor Eric Singson and PVL president Ricky Palou, the proceeds from the league’s second-round matches will be donated to families in Cebu devastated by Typhoon Tino.

“We decided, my fellow officials of the city, that the proceeds of these games in the PVL will be donated to Cebu City as our contribution sa mga naghihirap nating kababayan,” Mayor Singson shared, his words reflecting a commitment that goes far beyond local governance.

Palou, who immediately supported the mayor’s proposal, said, “The Mayor of Candon, Mayor Eric Singson, and I talked about it. We decided to give the proceeds of this game to the victims of the super typhoon. Si Mayor ang nag-suggest, sabi ko ‘Yeah that’s a good idea’ so we will do that.”

The decision transformed the PVL’s fourth visit to Candon in two years into more than just a sporting event — it became a lifeline.

Thursday’s double-header featuring PLDT vs. Galeries Tower and Choco Mucho vs. ZUS Coffee became a rallying point for both entertainment and empathy.

“Sa’min importante kasi ‘di ba you know naman in some areas, when a typhoon hits, it’s difficult for a lot of people. They get displaced from their homes, they get put into shelters. So any help that anyone can give them is good for everybody,” Palou emphasized, echoing the PVL’s growing commitment to social responsibility.

As another storm looms over parts of the country, Palou assured fans that the league is ready to help again — because in times of crisis, the true strength of sports lies not in trophies or standings, but in the spirit of bayanihan that unites communities.

In Candon, volleyball became more than a game — it became a symbol of hope.
