The Philippine boxing team is set to inject some serious professional firepower into its ranks for the upcoming 33rd Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in Thailand, as undefeated middleweight Weljon Mindoro is on the cusp of a national team call-up.

Mindoro, a 25-year-old power-puncher from Zamboanga Del Sur, has compiled an unblemished professional record of 15-0-1 with all wins coming from stoppages.

Now, he is trading the pro circuit for the patriotic duty of representing his country in the upcoming SEA Games this December.

The potential selection was signaled by Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) President Abraham “Bambol” Tolentino, who mentioned Mindoro’s name for the boxing squad.

“We are open on the idea of fighting, and it would be better if we all formally discuss the matter,” Orly Barcelango, Mindoro’s manager, said.

For Mindoro, who previously secured bronze and silver medals in local amateur events like the Batang Pinoy and Palarong Pambansa but never reached the national team, competing in the SEA Games is a lifelong dream realized.

“I am excited to represent the country internationally,” said Mindoro, who said he idolizes Filipino boxing legend Manny Pacquiao and pound-for-pound great Canelo Alvarez.

Mindoro’s entry could provide a massive boost to the Philippine boxing team as they vie for dominance in the regional meet this December.

The team is now awaiting formal communication from the Association of Boxing Alliances in the Philippines (ABAP) to make the exciting news official.
