The Korean Basketball League once again turned into a stage for Filipino firepower — and this time, Carl Tamayo stole the spotlight.
In a matchup that featured familiar UAAP standouts now thriving overseas, Tamayo came out on top of fellow Gilas Pilipinas forward Arvin Tolentino, steering the Changwon LG Sakers to an 80-75 win over the Seoul SK Knights on Sunday at the Jamsil Students’ Gymnasium.
Tamayo delivered one of his best outings in Korea yet, dropping 24 points, eight rebounds, and four assists in a complete performance that carried Changwon to an 8-3 record and solidified their place among the league’s top contenders.
The 23-year-old big man’s maturity has been evident in his second KBL season — no longer just a floor-spacer, Tamayo has evolved into a two-way presence capable of dictating tempo and punishing mismatches, a transformation that has helped him emerge as a cornerstone in the Sakers’ campaign.

While Tolentino’s Seoul SK squad kept it close throughout, Tamayo’s steady hand and late buckets proved decisive, showing how far he’s come since leaving the UAAP for Korean hardwoods.
But it wasn’t the only Filipino duel lighting up the weekend.
Over in Anyang, Rhenz Abando and Kevin Quiambao squared off in another highlight-filled matchup that continued the KBL’s growing Filipino flavor.
Abando, now a household name in Korea, tallied 11 points, four assists, and three rebounds to help the Anyang JKJ Red Boosters escape with a gritty 78-75 win — their eighth in ten games.
The versatile swingman once again made his presence felt beyond scoring, hustling on both ends and energizing a crowd that has fully embraced his high-flying flair.
Across the floor, Kevin Quiambao — the youngest of the Filipino trio — showed poise beyond his years. The former UAAP MVP finished with 17 points and four rebounds on 50 percent shooting, standing toe-to-toe with one of the league’s most explosive teams. But his efforts couldn’t prevent the Goyang Sono Skygunners from falling to 3-8.
Three Filipino standouts. Three different paths. Yet all proving that the Philippines’ brand of basketball belongs on any stage — even under the bright lights of the KBL.
As the season wears on, fans can only expect more of these Pinoy-versus-Pinoy battles that not only test individual growth but also showcase how far the new generation of Filipino hoopers has come.
