Philippines to bid for hosting of 2036 Olympics

Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) Chairman Patrick Gregorio revealed that the Philippines is considering a bid for the 2036 Olympic Games.

Gregorio shared that President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos has already given the green light to the PSC to prepare the necessary documents for a bid.

In a meeting on Monday, Nov. 2, Gregorio announced what could be a historic moment for the Philippines’ sports with national athletes and leaders in attendance.

“The year 2036 is still open. They say, bidding is one thing, winning is another thing. Let’s just bid, and if they give it to us during our lifetime, at least we started it,” Gregorio said.

“I presented it to President Marcos, and he said, ‘Why not? Plot it. That is why you have the sports tourism inter-agency committee, plot it with the (Philippine) Olympic Committee,” he added.

Aside from its significance to Philippine sports, Gregorio added that it would mark a significant boost for tourism in the country.

Gregorio also stressed the importance of the hosting, if it happens, for relations with other Southeast Asian nations.

“And it is a very good story, it is a very good narrative — that Southeast Asia is willing, open, and interested to work together to bid for the Olympic Games,” he said.

The decision to bid comes after years of successful hosting of the FIBA Basketball World Cup in 2023, among other prestigious events. The country will also play host to the upcoming FIFA Futsal Women’s World Cup this November.

The Olympics will be hosted by the USA in Los Angeles for 2028, while Australia will host in 2032.
