Filipino judoka Chino Sy continued his stellar form after capturing a silver medal at the Gold Coast Oceania Judo Open 2025 at the Carrara Indoor Sports Stadium on Sunday, Nov. 2.
Sy, who is also a part of the Sambo national team, took home silver in the men’s -100kg Half Heavyweight division after falling to Great Britain’s Oliver Barratt in the final.
This is a huge milestone for my sporting career as it marks my first time back in an international judo competition and a step closer to my dreams,” Sy wrote on Facebook.
“Today, I got a silver medal in the Oceania Judo Open 2025, where I faced 4 ranked judokas, and I may have let the gold medal slip, but I am very happy with the result of this competition,” he added. “I will continue to push myself and aim higher. This is just the beginning of my journey, please continue to support me as I take each step toward my family’s and my long-time dream.”

The Filipino came out of the gates aggressively with a waza-ari, but Barratt then countered and secured the crown with an ippon.
In Pool C, Sy conquered American Tokozu Takahashi and Gade Kalbu Soethama of Indonesia en route to the knockout stage.
The rising star then toppled Australia’s Jack Rigby in the semifinals to book a spot against Barratt in the championship match.
Sy is set to compete in the 33rd Southeast Asian (SEA) Games this December. He last won a gold medal in sambo at the event in 2019.
