Los Angeles Lakers superstar LeBron James, widely regarded as one of the greatest players in NBA history, has built an unparalleled résumé that includes four championships, numerous accolades, and the league’s all-time scoring record.
Now 40 years old and approaching the twilight of his storied career, James recently exercised his $52.6 million player option with the Lakers for the 2025–26 season — a campaign that many believe could be his final one. By doing so, he’s set to make history as the first player in NBA history to play 23 seasons, surpassing Vince Carter’s previous mark of 22.
Financially, LeBron remains the wealthiest active NBA player, with his career earnings — spanning salary, incentives, endorsements, and business ventures — exceeding $581 million. He also holds the distinction of being the first active NBA player to become a billionaire.

In a recent appearance on his wife Savannah’s podcast, Everybody’s Crazy, James opened up about his approach to money and why he avoids taking major financial risks despite his immense wealth.
“As far as business, I’m kind of like five out of ten,” James explained. “I’ll take a couple of risks, knowing I can hustle it back. But I’m the first generational money maker in my family — coming from the projects in Akron, Ohio, and not having anything. It’s hard for me sometimes to take risks because if something goes wrong, it’s over with. I’d be devastated.”
Despite his billionaire status, LeBron is known for his frugal habits. He has previously admitted to avoiding unnecessary expenses — from not paying for premium apps to skipping mobile data roaming.
“I’m not turning on data roaming. I’m not buying apps. I still got Pandora with commercials — I’m not paying for it,” he once said with a laugh.
Even during his Miami Heat days, the four-time NBA champion was famously spotted riding his bicycle to games, a symbol of his disciplined, down-to-earth approach.
LeBron James may have built an empire through talent, business acumen, and longevity, but at heart, he remains the same kid from Akron — cautious, grounded, and determined to protect the wealth he worked so hard to earn.
