The Los Angeles Lakers have suffered a major setback early in the 2025–26 NBA season, with confirmation that star guard Luka Doncic will miss at least one week due to injury.

Doncic sat out the Lakers’ 120–127 victory over the Sacramento Kings at the Golden 1 Center on Monday, October 27 (Philippine time), after sustaining a left finger sprain and a lower leg contusion. The team announced that the Slovenian superstar will be re-evaluated in a week.

NBA insider Dave McMenamin of ESPN broke the news on X (formerly Twitter), reporting:

“Lakers star Luka Doncic is out today against the Kings with a left finger sprain and a lower leg contusion. A big blow for the Lakers, already without LeBron James and now missing the services of Doncic and his 46 points per game average in the early going.”

McMenamin added that Doncic’s condition will be reassessed after one week.

The injury compounds the Lakers’ early-season struggles, as LeBron James has yet to play this season due to sciatica, with no clear timetable for his return.

Doncic has been electric in his first two games as a Laker, averaging 46 points, 11.5 rebounds, and 8.5 assists, including a 49-point explosion in a blowout win over the Minnesota Timberwolves. He nearly notched a triple-double in that game, leading Los Angeles to a 128–110 victory.

The Slovenian is expected to miss games against the Kings, Trail Blazers, Timberwolves, Grizzlies, and Heat, a crucial stretch for the Lakers in a tightly contested Western Conference.

In Doncic’s and LeBron’s absence, Austin Reaves will shoulder the scoring load. Reaves has impressed early, averaging 25.5 points, 10 assists, and six rebounds, and erupted for 51 points against Sacramento. Rui Hachimura is also expected to take on a larger offensive role.

Even with their latest win, the Lakers face a testing stretch ahead. With both Doncic and James sidelined, the pressure mounts for the supporting cast to keep the team competitive in the West, where even a short slump could derail playoff ambitions.
