Pinoy imports shine bright as Rhenz Abando leads Anyang’s surge in the KBL

The Korean Basketball League’s weekend slate turned into a showcase of Filipino grit and flair as Rhenz Abando continued to make waves in his return to action, steering Anyang Jung Kwan Jang Red Boosters to back-to-back victories capped by a commanding 79-66 win over Ulsan Hyundai Mobis Phoebus on Sunday.

Abando, whose energy and explosiveness have reignited Anyang’s campaign, finished with 14 points, five rebounds, four assists, a steal, and a block, leading the defending champions to a 5-2 record.

His two-way dominance not only thrilled the Anyang faithful but also reaffirmed why he remains one of the most electrifying Filipino talents abroad.

Meanwhile, Migs Oczon struggled to find rhythm for Ulsan, logging just three points in 11 minutes as his team slipped to 3-4.

Over in Seoul, Arvin Tolentino continued to impress in his first KBL season, helping Seoul SK Knights bounce back with an 81-66 victory over Wonju DB Promy. The former PBA standout tallied 13 points and a rebound, showcasing his efficient scoring and adaptability in the fast-paced Korean game.

It was a much-needed win for Seoul (3-4), who had narrowly fallen to Ulsan two nights earlier despite Tolentino’s 17-point effort. Oczon starred in that Ulsan win, contributing five points, five assists, and two rebounds in a balanced team performance.

Wonju’s Ethan Alvano, however, remained consistent in defeat, exploding for 18 points on 5-of-9 three-point shooting, while adding nine rebounds and three assists for the Promy (4-3).

The Busan KCC Egis extended their winning streak to four games after grinding out a 64-58 road win over Goyang Sono Skygunners, climbing to the top of the standings with a 5-1 record.

Though William Navarro went scoreless in two minutes, Busan’s collective defense and composure proved enough to outlast a Goyang squad powered by Kevin Quiambao, who finished with 11 points, three steals, two rebounds, and two assists.

For Quiambao, it was a quieter outing following his spectacular 29-point performance in Goyang’s previous game — an 83-76 loss to Wonju. Despite his efforts, the Skygunners have now dropped two straight and sit at 2-5.

Carl Tamayo continued to anchor the Changwon LG Sakers, delivering 10 points, eight rebounds, and two assists in their 75-64 win over Seoul Samsung Thunders.

The Sakers improved to 4-2, while Justin Gutang battled hard for the Thunders with nine points, five rebounds, and three assists, though his team fell to 2-3.

In Suwon, JD Cagulangan played a quiet but steady role in the KT SonicBoom’s 68-65 escape of Daegu KOGAS Pegasus. The UAAP Season 87 Finals MVP chipped in three points and an assist to help Suwon move to 4-2.

Despite SJ Belangel’s valiant 13-point outing (including three triples), Daegu’s winless drought continued, falling to 0-6 in what has been a frustrating start for the Gilas Pilipinas guard and company.
