The Philippine women’s beach volleyball team recently saw action at the World Beach Pro Tour Challenge held at the Nuvali Sands Court in Santa Rosa, Laguna, where the veteran duo of Sisi Rondina and Bernadeth Pons advanced to the round of 24.
Rondina and Pons pushed Swiss pair Annique Niederhauser and Menia Bentele to the limit before bowing out in a thrilling three-set match, 18-21, 24-22, 15-12. Despite the loss, the performance has boosted the confidence of Philippine National Volleyball Federation (PNVF) president Ramon “Tats” Suzara ahead of the 2025 Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in Bangkok.
“Gold is what we are aiming for in Thailand,” said Suzara. “We’ve had plenty of SEA Games bronze medals. We know it’s difficult, but we believe it’s possible. I’m hoping our athletes can convert the experience from Nuvali into a gold-medal finish at the SEA Games.”

Since beach volleyball became a medal sport in the SEA Games in 2003, the Philippines has yet to win gold, collecting six bronze medals—three each from the men’s and women’s teams. Thailand and Indonesia remain the dominant nations in Southeast Asia, each securing eight gold medals across both divisions.
Alas Pilipinas head coach Joao Luciano Simao Barbosa confirmed that Rondina and Pons will once again team up for the women’s division, alongside the tandem of Dij Rodriguez and Sunny Villapando. Representing the men’s side will be James Buytrago, Ran Abdilla, Ronniel Rosales, and Rancel Vergara.
“We are working hard to fight for the gold,” said Barbosa. “All the opponents are strong, and we still have a few months to prepare. Step by step, we’re going to reach for that gold.”
The 2025 SEA Games will officially open on December 9, with beach volleyball action scheduled from December 12 to 19 at the Huamark Sports Complex in Bangkok.
