The Los Angeles Lakers have suffered a significant setback ahead of the 2025–26 NBA season, with superstar LeBron James expected to miss the season opener due to a sciatica-related issue affecting his right side.

On Friday, October 10 (Philippine Standard Time), the Lakers confirmed that the 40-year-old, four-time NBA champion will be sidelined for at least three to four weeks. This timeline rules him out of training camp and potentially the early games of the regular season.

NBA insider and ESPN reporter Shams Charania provided the latest update on LeBron’s condition, revealing that both the Lakers’ management and the player are targeting a mid-November return. The Lakers plan to re-evaluate LeBron’s status around October 30, a key date that could provide a clearer picture of his comeback timeline.

“I’m told that the Lakers and LeBron are looking at around mid-November as a realistic debut for him, and so October 30 would be the earliest that the Lakers would officially re-evaluate LeBron James. However, it is expected he will need at least a few weeks after that point. A source told me tonight that LeBron will be taking a patient approach with this rehab from nerve injury,” Charania said.

Sciatica occurs when the sciatic nerve is irritated or compressed, causing sharp or burning pain, numbness, tingling, or a pins-and-needles sensation in the lower body. LeBron reportedly sustained the injury during an on-court workout in late July and has emphasized a cautious approach to his rehabilitation.

The Lakers will undoubtedly feel his absence, as LeBron continued to deliver elite performances last season, averaging 24.4 points, 8.2 assists, and 7.8 rebounds per game. Despite this setback, the veteran is poised to make history when he returns: the 2025–26 season will mark his record-breaking 23rd year in the NBA, surpassing Vince Carter for the longest career in league history.

Since joining the Lakers in the 2018–19 season, the team has posted a 248–171 record with LeBron on the floor, compared to 56–78 without him — a clear testament to his enduring impact, even in the twilight of a legendary career.
