The weekend triple-header in the 2025 PBA Philippine Cup will see the up-and-coming Converge Fiberxers take on powerhouse TNT Tropang 5G on Saturday, while the Rain or Shine Elastopainters are set to face San Miguel Beermen in the opening game on Sunday. The Meralco Bolts will try to improve their 1-2 record against LA Tenorio and the Magnolia Hotshots.

Converge FiberXers (1-0) vs TNT Tropang Giga (1-1) (Oct. 18)

TNT is coming off a tough loss to Barangay Ginebra San Miguel, where they struggled to maintain consistency on both ends of the floor. The Tropang Giga started strong but faded midway through the game, allowing the Gin Kings to dictate tempo and control the boards — something head coach Chot Reyes will surely address heading into this matchup. 

Converge, meanwhile, enters with momentum after an impressive win over the Titan Ultra Giant Risers, led by rookie sensation Juan Gomez de Liano, who has quickly become one of the team’s most reliable scorers. Big man Justin Arana continues to make his case as one of the PBA’s emerging stars, anchoring the paint with his rebounding and inside presence. For TNT, the key will be sustaining energy and preventing another mid-game collapse, while Converge will look to capitalize on their youthful pace and confidence to seize control early.

The defending champions have struggled with chemistry and execution early on, as their usually potent offense has yet to click. Reigning MVP June Mar Fajardo has shown flashes of brilliance but also signs of wear, meaning he’ll need strong support from Jericho Cruz and Don Trollano to turn things around. 

On the other side, Rain or Shine has impressed with its balance and energy under head coach Yeng Guiao. The Elastopainters are slowly establishing themselves as dark-horse contenders this conference, thanks to the steady play of Caelan Tiongson and the emerging confidence of Adrian Nocum. Facing a San Miguel squad eager to bounce back, Rain or Shine’s composure and shot-making in the closing minutes could determine whether they can pull off another statement win.

Under new head coach LA Tenorio, Magnolia has quickly reestablished itself as a legitimate contender in the Philippine Cup. Tenorio’s leadership and basketball IQ have translated seamlessly from the court to the sidelines, giving the Hotshots a fresh yet familiar identity built on discipline and defense. Rising star Zavier Lucero has emerged as one of the league’s most versatile two-way players, complementing the veteran trio of Mark Barroca, Paul Lee, and the fast-developing sharpshooter Jerom Lastimosa.

 On the other end, Meralco has struggled to find consistency to start the season. The Bolts are still integrating key pieces, as Allein Maliksi works his way back into form and young gun CJ Cansino adjusts to the physicality of the PBA. Both teams will have played earlier in the weekend, and fatigue could play a role — but Magnolia’s depth and chemistry may give them the upper hand when they meet on Sunday night.
