Jema Galanza faces career-threatening injury, to miss rest of PVL Reinforced Conference

Creamline Cool Smashers star and former MVP Jema Galanza will be sidelined indefinitely as she recovers from a complicated career-threatening foot injury.

Galanza, who will miss the Reinforced Conference, said she is focusing on a full recovery due to the injury being serious enough to be career-ending if exacerbated.

“The doctor told me that it’s dangerous to play through the injury since there’s a big chance my career will end if it gets worse,” Galanza said in Filipino. “So we just focused on healing my foot instead of risking an injury we don’t know how long will last.”

Galanza last played for Creamline in last season’s Invitationals Conference, where she helped the Cool Smashers notch their 19th consecutive podium finish

Galanza continued that she played hurt last season and that she and the team’s physical therapists still don’t know the severity of the foot injury..

“It’s been painful for a year, and especially in the last Invitationals, I’ve been in pain every day. So I already told our physical therapist that it’s not normal anymore. We had an MRI, and there, we saw something wrong,” she said.

“It’s hard to risk anything because we still don’t know if it’s healing or which stage we are at already [with recovery], if it’s healed, still healing, or still severe. We’re just focusing on healing the bone, and I don’t know how long I’ll be in a boot,” Galanza added.

Creamline will have to seek to regain its grand-slam winning ways without Galanza as skipper Alyssa Valdez will still lead the team alongside three-time MVP Tots Carlos, Michelle Gumabao, and Bea De Leon.

Galanza said Creamline is in no hurry to put her back in the team and stresses that she accepts whatever may happen to her career in the future.

“Creamline is there to always support [me], and though they’re sad that I can’t play, they’re leaning towards what’s more important, for me to recover and be 100%,” said Galanza.

“We still have a long way to go in our careers, and there are so many more years left to bounce back. As they say, everything happens for a reason,” she added.
