Filipino-American gymnast Aleah Finnegan etched her name in history after becoming the first female gymnast from the Philippines to compete in the Olympic Games in over half a century. The 22-year-old represented the country at the 2024 Paris Olympics, ending a 60-year drought since Maria-Luisa Floro and Evelyn Magluyan competed at the 1964 Tokyo Games.

Finnegan, who officially began representing the Philippines in 2022, was joined in Paris by fellow Filipino-American gymnasts Levi Ruivivar and Emma Malabuyo, further highlighting the growing depth and international reach of Filipino gymnastics talent.

Currently training in Manila, Finnegan expressed optimism about the sport’s trajectory in the country—especially with the Philippines set to host the 3rd FIG Artistic Gymnastics Junior World Championships later this year.

“I really think it’s important that our young girls get to witness high-level gymnastics right here in the Philippines,” said Finnegan during a recent media session. “Many start by watching athletes on TV or social media, but now, we’re bringing elite competitors to inspire them in person. It’s the Junior Worlds, so you know the talent level will be exceptional.”

Finnegan believes the event could be a turning point for gymnastics in the Philippines, sparking greater interest and development among the youth.

“The goal is to inspire Filipino athletes and gymnasts. We want to show the world that the Philippines is here to play. We don’t want to be overlooked—we’re pushing hard for the growth of gymnastics,” she added.

Finnegan began her gymnastics journey at just two years old and boasts an impressive resume. She was part of the USA senior national team from 2019 to 2021 and helped the squad secure a gold medal at the 2019 Pan American Games.

Now fully committed to her Filipino roots, she is currently preparing for the World Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Jakarta, Indonesia next month, followed by the 2025 Southeast Asian Games in Bangkok, Thailand this December.

“It’s amazing how things have aligned, and I’m really excited to be part of this movement. I’m here to support the federation however I can,” said Finnegan.

With her talent, poise, and international experience, Aleah Finnegan is poised to become one of the Philippines’ brightest sports stars—and a key figure in ushering in a new era for Philippine gymnastics.
