Alas Pilipinas skipper Jia de Guzman has committed to play for the national team in the 2029 FIVB Volleyball Women’s World Championships that will be held in the Philippines.

The 30-year-old came off a national team stint when Alas Pilipinas captured a historic silver medal in the AVC Nations Cup last June, and a third-place finish in the Southeast Asian V.League last August.

De Guzman, who is set to sit out the 2025 PVL Reinforced Conference for rest, said that representing the country in the hometown event is one of the goals she looks to prepare for.

“Of course, I will do everything in my power to play in the 2029 Women’s World Championships,” de Guzman said. “It’s once in a lifetime. It gave me another goal to prepare for.”

“As athletes, we just want to do everything that we can to play at a high level and learn from what we can. And the World Championships is one place to do that. I want to be there,” she added.

The PVL’s eight-time Best Setter stressed that the women’s team has a lot more time to prepare for what she called a “once-in-a-lifetime event” than the men’s team, who bounced out in the group stage of the recently concluded Men’s World Championships.

“It’s a once-in-a-lifetime event,” said De Guzman. “When they announced that the women’s will happen here in not even four years. We were just cheering at first, and then I realized—wow, we have a lot of time to prepare for this.”

“As compared to what the men had to experience with only 16 months to prepare, they still showed how well they can play against big powerhouses internationally. Kami naman, we will get that chance also. So, we want to take advantage of the time that was given to us to prepare,” she added.

In the meantime, de Guzman is preparing to lead Alas once again, this time, in the upcoming 33rd Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in Thailand this December.
