Filipino Jiu-Jitsu icon and MMA trailblazer Alvin Aguilar continues to raise the Philippine flag on the global stage, adding another milestone to his storied career. Aguilar, founder of the country’s largest Jiu-Jitsu organization, earned four prestigious coaching awards at the recently concluded 2025 Sport Jiu-Jitsu International Federation (SJJIF) World Championships held in Chiba, Japan.

Aguilar was named Coach of the Year in four categories — Gi Adults, NoGi Adults, Gi Kids, and NoGi Kids — after leading the Philippine delegation to an outstanding showing in the international tournament.

The veteran coach and martial arts ambassador shared the achievement via social media, highlighting the collective effort behind the honor.

“I am incredibly proud to share that I have received the Quadruple Award for Coach of the Year in the world at the SJJIF World Championships held in Chiba, Japan,” Aguilar wrote. “This honor recognizes my contributions in four categories… but more than anything, this is a victory for everyone at DEFTAC — our dedicated Chapter Heads, Coaches, parents, and especially our students.”

Aguilar is no stranger to success. As the founder and head coach of DEFTAC Ribeiro Jiu-Jitsu Philippines, he has helped nurture the sport’s grassroots and elite levels alike. He also serves as the president of the Wrestling Association of the Philippines and has been instrumental in the development of MMA in the country through the Universal Reality Combat Championship (URCC), which he founded in 2002.

A decorated competitor himself, Aguilar won gold at the 2016 Asian Jiu-Jitsu Championship in Tokyo, Japan, and has proudly represented the Philippines in numerous international events.

With this latest recognition, Aguilar solidifies his legacy not just as a pioneer, but as one of the sport’s most impactful mentors. And with no signs of slowing down, the combat sports community eagerly awaits what’s next for the Filipino legend.
