5 UAAP players that might play internationally

Brenn FloresBasketball1 hour ago28 Views

In recent years, more opportunities have opened up for the Filipino collegiate players to play internationally. Gone were the days when the only chance of playing professionally – at the highest level – was in the PBA.

These days, great players can opt to play in the Japan B.League, Korean Basketball League (KBL), or even in the Euroleague. Recent players such as Kevin Quiambao, JD Cagulangan, Francis Lopez, and Carl Tamayo, among others, have made the jump from the UAAP to the international stage.

Opportunities post-college are now well and truly abundant. The so-called “exodus” is often criticized by Filipinos for their refusal to play locally, but with better pay and arguably better play, why wouldn’t they take advantage of the opportunity?

As long as the PBA or the MPBL match the salaries and level of play, more players will explore more opportunities to play abroad. That is why we listed the possible players in the UAAP today that might play internationally:

  • Harold Alarcon

The sweet-shooting Alarcon from the UP Fighting Maroons will undoubtedly hold a place for UP fans after his collegiate career ends this UAAP Season 88. The 23-year-old from Silay was integral in the squad that broke UP’s 36-year championship slump, and then again in their championship last season.

Alarcon has constantly proved that he can deliver in big moments, as well as being a fire starter off the bench. His fadeaway shots have become iconic during his time, alongside his fiery presence on the court. International teams would have heard of Alarcon, given that his multiple former teammates have gone overseas.

  • Nic Cabanero

UST’s latest King Tiger has made a name for himself as one of the UAAP’s most dependable scorers during his collegiate career. Cabanero has led the Growling Tigers in scoring for the last three years and is currently on track to do so again this season.

The Cebu native became España’s savior after the Sorsogon bubble scandal that destroyed the team’s core of CJ Cansino, Rhenzo Abando, and Mark Nonoy, alongside the sacking of head coach Aldin Ayo. With his identity as a lethal scorer, offers abroad will surely be present once he graduates this season.

  • Jake Figueroa

One of the least popular players in this list, but certainly not the one with the least talent. Figueroa has served as a consistent threat for the NU Bulldogs since last season. It wasn’t until this season that Figueroa transformed into a household name after leading NU to the top of the league standings.

The forward proved that he is already PBA-ready following exquisite performances against the league’s top teams. Figueroa does it all. He can guard the opposition’s best scorer while being a menace on the other end. Almost all of the country has taken notice to his game, and surely scouts internationally have done the same.

  • Forthsky Padrigao

Renowned for his elite court vision, crafty ball-handling, and leadership at the point guard position, Padrigao’s style of play fits well with the fast-paced, guard-driven systems of leagues abroad.

His high basketball IQ, harnessed under Tab Baldwin, and ability to orchestrate offenses remain undeniable assets that could attract international scouts.

With several Filipino guards, including Kiefer Ravena and RJ Abarrientos, finding success overseas, Padrigao could follow a similar path if he continues to refine his consistency and shooting touch. More so if he and Cabanero can lead UST back to the UAAP finals this season.

  • Jarred Bahay

A rising star even before he stepped foot in the UAAP court, Bahay is quickly establishing himself as one of the most promising young two-way guards in Philippine basketball. Despite his youth, the former Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu standout has already impressed with his elite ball-handling, sharp court vision, and fearless scoring mentality.

Standing just under six feet, Bahay compensates with exceptional quickness, poise under pressure, and a natural feel for running the offense, traits that have drawn comparisons to some of the most successful Filipino guards abroad. His ability to create shots both for himself and his teammates, coupled with his growing confidence as a floor general, makes him an ideal fit for Asian professional systems that value speed and decision-making.
